Toolkits for User Innovation and Design (TUID) is a new concept for the new product development process. This approach suggests shifting product innovation and design tasks from the locus of the manufacturer to the locus of the customer.
Thus, the TUID user is enabled to create a unique product that fits to his individual needs in a better way compared to picking a standard product. Therefore, the most obvious benefit for the customer lies in a functional adjustment of the problem solution (functional benefit). We hypothesise, however, that these self-designed products create value for the user beyond the purely functional benefit, namely symbolic and psychological utility.
Research into value creation of toolkits from a customer’s perspective is very limited so far. Apart from academic interest insights in this phenomenon will also be valuable for manufacturers considering implementing the toolkit approach.
